10 ways to make your kite last longer

A kite needs quite a bit of maintenance, but here are some tips to keep in mind to extend the life of your kite.
01 Sand. Enemy number one. Before you pack your kite, make sure to remove all sand from the kite. Sand wears down the materials, makes it easier to get holes and causes the fabric to tear prematurely.
02 Don't pack a wet kite. Washing your kite is not always necessary (but certainly not wrong). However, if you wash your kite after each session, make sure it is dry before packing it away. If you pack a wet kite in your bag, it can become moldy and start to smell bad. In many cases, the kite will also become discolored.
03 Rig and pump up the kite as close to the water as possible. By flying an inflated kite for a longer distance, you increase the risk of it getting caught on things on the way to the water. This could be trees and lampposts or being dragged on the asphalt. This causes unnecessary wear and tear on the kite.
04 The kite pump. When packing up your pump, remove the hose and store it separately. This way, there is less risk of bending the hose more than it can handle, and therefore risking cracking it.
05 Boom and ropes. Keep your lines knot-free and wash your boom in fresh water after use. A knot in the line weakens it by more than 50% and then risks it breaking when you least expect it. The reason to wash your boom is because salt water erodes the lines over time.
06 Avoid starting the kite yourself. Starting a bow or C-kite yourself causes it to wear out more than necessary. When the kite is on its side and in the “0” position, it scrapes against the surface and thus wears it out more.
07 Avoid twisting the bladder. Make sure the kite is flat and fully unfolded when you start pumping. If you let the kite “roll up” on its own when you pump, you risk the bladder twisting in the leading edge. Also, remember not to stick the pump nozzle down too far as this will stretch the valve.
08 Use your kite bag. Do not store or transport your kite without its bag. Especially when it is in your car. Fins on the board and other sharp objects can easily get in and cut holes in the kite.
09 Waves. If you drop the kite in waves, let it go. Waves can stretch the material in the kite and if they are big enough, they can even tear it apart.
10 Sun and wind. Do not let the kite lie and flap in the wind, and do not leave it in the sun more than necessary. Too much sun makes the material brittle and it also loses its color. The flapping in the wind wears the surface fabric over time.
Some of these points can be difficult to follow exactly. The idea is to keep them in mind when you are out and about. Maybe you can do something different that could save your kite from unnecessary wear and tear?
Good luck and Kite safe!
