What is SUP?
SUP (Stand Up Paddling) is a sport that is becoming quite common and is for most people the first step into the world of water sports. It is quite similar to wave surfing, but the boards are generally a bit larger and you stand up and paddle your way forward instead. This makes the sport very versatile. You can paddle on pretty much any body of water: rivers, lakes and oceans, with or without waves. Flat water paddling provides a very good workout while paddling in waves gives you that extra kick.

Other benefits of SUP are:
- Easy to learn
- A few things to keep track of
- Social – easy to do with friends
- Can be done every day!
So what is the difference between a SUP and a kayak, for example? Yes, because you stand up, you can see better. The board is quite light compared to a kayak. This makes it easier to handle loading to and from the beach.
What do you need to get started?
First and foremost, a SUP board. An all-round board is preferable for most people. There are also racing boards and wave boards. These are, just as they sound, dedicated boards that are made for going fast or turning easily on the waves.
The all-round boards are suitable everywhere, even with these you can ride a little in the waves, even if they are not quite as fast to turn around with. You will find the most common models in our webshop .
Choose the size of your SUP board
- The longer the board, the better it glides. This is because it has more surface area in the water. This is good if you are going to paddle long distances on flat water.
- The more width in the board, the better stability.
- A short board is best for changing direction quickly and for foot control. For example, on waves.
Paddle
Here you can choose between different materials and to some extent also lengths. Carbon is much lighter and stiffer, but more expensive. See our webshop .
Leash
ALWAYS use a leash/catch strap. It is attached to one leg and to the back of the board. When you fall, the board simply won't stick out with a leash, but if you're without one, it can easily drift away and the distance to shore can be long and dangerous.
Clothes
Normally, no special clothing is needed if you choose a stable board. You stand on it stably as long as you paddle on flat water. As mentioned above, we include the models we recommend for most people – this means stability first and foremost.
If you are going out when it is really cold, some kind of neoprene is recommended. This will keep you warm even if you fall in.
